History of the Library

The Poquoson Public Library was established in 1976 as part of the Bicentennial Celebration project by a group of dedicated citizens and in July 1980, the Library was accredited by the State Library Board. In April 1983, the City purchased the old First National Bank building on Poquoson Avenue as the next site for the library. Our service has grown steadily since then and in June of 1997, the Library moved into the new City Hall and Library complex at 500 City Hall Avenue.

The Library is operated as a public lending facility with a book collection oriented to all ages and interests. In addition to classics and popular reading, the Library provides word processing and internet computers, periodicals and newspapers, DVD's, video cassettes, audio cassettes, audio compact discs, music CD's, large print books, municipal information, tax forms, and notary service. Along with its primary lending activities, the Library contains genealogical files relating to family histories in Poquoson. It also offers interlibrary loan service and sponsors informational and cultural programs, classes, and reading incentive activities for both children and adults. Meeting rooms are available at no cost for public meetings of civic, cultural, or educational organizations.

Library Advisory Board is appointed by the City Council. The library is actively supported by the Friends of the Poquoson Public Library Association.
