Year in Review

In 2011, the library fine-tuned its core services to ensure minimum impact on our citizens in this economic climate. PPL remained one of the busiest libraries in Virginia and in the United States. During the year, 12,391 active library members visited the library 121,849 times, borrowed 196,059 items, logged on to the computers for 15,695 sessions, participated in 381 programs, and met here on 1,484 occasions. The library provided access to a collection on 61,995 items which includes books, DVDs, books on CD, music CDs, magazines, downloadable audio and eBooks, and eReaders with pre-loaded best sellers. The library appreciated the 2,991 hours donated by 82 volunteers.

The library continues to support you with weekend and evening hours; interlibrary loans, notary, proctoring & passport services; meeting rooms, copy machine & fax services; programs and special events for all ages.

In the Virginia Public Library Statistics, Poquoson Library ranked 1st in library visits per capita and second in circulation per capita among the 13 public libraries in the Tidewater Area, and 5th highest in visits and 7th in circulation among the 91 public libraries in Virginia.

The library received the 2011 Outstanding Program for Seniors Award and the Outstanding Program for Children Award from the Virginia Public Library Director’s Association. Also awarded the Library of Virginia Foundation Grant to sponsor an early literacy outreach program.

The role of the library has shifted from a traditional book lending agency to a community hub where reading materials, computer access, art exhibits, classes, story times, reading clubs, musical performances, public meetings, notary & passport acceptance services and so much more are offered. There are countless ways to enjoy your library. In this day of instant information, you can still find a friendly face and personal attention here. Stop by and see how we are building a community of readers.
